An installation by Hye Lee in dialogue with the Society of Smallness
Logan Square Art Festival, Chicago
Artist Hye Lee often starts her work with an open-ended question rather than with a ready-made concept. Along the way, she embraces happy accidents and ‘what if’ scenarios. Lost and Found: Within and Without is an ongoing project probing the idea of art as a recreated form of memory. Hye invites friends and strangers to draw and tell stories about objects they have lost. These records serve as inspiration for poetic sculptures made with simple materials and a quiet palette.
Alongside Hye’s reconstructed lost objects, the Society of Smallness presents its collection of beach glass, rusted wire, and other weathered treasures found along the increasingly cluttered cosmic trail. Like the memories within, the material world without grows and changes in response to the fluctuating waves of time.
